You have permission to rest….I will say it again. You (Yes, You!) have permission to rest. As caring individuals, we often instinctively help others, before helping ourselves. This turns into a cycle of serving everyone else before our needs if ever get met. I know you are busy and finding the time to take for yourself can be challenging. However, we are not built on to be automatic and successful with every opportunity. Staying in this cycle of serving everyone else can lead to a point where it’s challenging to care about anything or other individuals. I should know.

A few years ago, I was in my first teaching job, working my regular hours and volunteering for every opportunity that was outside my position. I enjoyed working with my students and staff members and I wanted to be PERFECT always.

But I had no life.

I rarely took any time for myself as I was always focused on goals, achievements and meeting the excessive expectations I put on myself. Through my high tolerance for discomfort, I justified the reasoning for all the commitments I made at the expense of being a well-rounded human being. When the school year ended, I felt I beat the “horror” stories of first-year teachers. I placed so many interventions on top of interventions, that some even questioned whether this is my first year.

But guess what?

At the end of the school year(June) I was showing symptoms of what I thought was a little cold. I spent 4 weeks in bed that summer with a whopping cough.

Why did this happen?

Well I had been completing my teaching duties, serving my family and volunteering for my favorite causes in all available waking hours. I forgot to take care of myself and my body provided a big reminder to slow down.

 

A whopping cough was a harsh reminder that I needed to slow down and focus on my health. As I spent time thinking, some though trains of thought would rise and I could feel my heart elevate in a twinge of anxiety. I vowed on my cat’s grandchildren, that I would take better care of myself. For me, I needed a daily implementation and started with making tiny changes.

Self-Care is not Selfish

Think of your body as a vehicle and self care-freebie how we respond to our vehicle. We want our vehicle (our body) to perform at its optimal best and last for a long time. Our vehicle supports us for a variety of different reasons and helps us to achieve our goals. We take the time to provide our vehicle with fuel(food), oil change, tire rotations and a variety of other maintenance options for lasting performance. The same applies to our body we try to eat before we are starving and implement good health habits because we want to be around for a long time. Now imagine what would happen if we did not perform the maintenance options around the expected time or at all. We would not notice it at first, but gradually our vehicle would not perform at its best and would lose its value and purpose. The same is true for ourselves if we do not take care of ourselves, we would decrease in our ability to be able to serve those we love. Gradually our service to others would decrease to becoming nonexistent. Think of self-care opportunities as little pit stops to help you be the best of service to others. Who doesn’t want to be the best?

Small Steps to Self-Care

Self-care is constant repetition of many tiny habits that come together until it feels like it’s a lifestyle. I know you are bucking at me and saying I don’t have time.
